[Also in Division H2] An article comprising a body with projections extending parallel with a major surface, e.g. an electronic module with projecting leads, is packaged between two opposed webs or sheets each of which has an aperture to receive the body, the projections being embraced by the sheets. Modules 11 are enclosed between sheets 21, 23 which may be laminated thermoplastic films, and the sheets sealed together by heated rollers 29. Fig. 1 shows the leads 15 as parts of a sheet 19, the surround of which is trimmed off during manufacture. Test probes 31 engage the leads through the upper sheet and a punch 33 rejects any faulty package. Sprocket holes 25, 25<SP>1</SP> permit web feed by a spiked roller, Fig. 2b (not shown). The package strip may be rolled with a separator web for storage. In securing the module to a printed circuit board (39), Figs. 3-6 (not shown), hot probes (43) punch the leads through the webs, forming loops which, being solder coated, are soldered to the circuit lines on the board. At the same time, the package is severed from the strip, the joined sheets being retained on the leads and portions remaining between them as an insulating and strengthening medium. |
