A process for the hydrogenolysis of a diphenyl hydrocarbon comprises mixing the diphenyl hydrocarbon with a H2-containing gaseous stream, the quantity, temperature and rate of injection of the gaseous stream being selected to raise the temperature of the diphenyl hydrocarbon substantially instantaneously to at least 535 DEG C., and heating the mixture to the final reaction temperature of hydrogenolysis. Preferably, diphenyl is mixed with a first H2-containing stream and the mixture heated before a second H2-containing stream is supplied to raise the temperature to at least 535 DEG C. The first stream preferably comprises at least 50% by vol. H2 and the mol. ratio of stream to diphenyl is from 1:1 to 2:1. The initial mixture may be heated to between 425 DEG and 535 DEG C. The second stream may also contain 50% by vol. H2 and the mole ratio of stream to the initial mixture is from 5:1 to 15:1. The temperature of the second stream may be 705-930 DEG C. to produce a final mixture at 595-760 DEG C. before it is heated to the final reaction temperature of 705-930 DEG C. for a period of 1 to 6 seconds. A sulphur compound may be added to the reaction system in an amount 100-300 p.p.m. The process of the invention may be carried out in conjunction with the hydrodealkylation process of Specification 1,118,458.
