A ball-and-socket joint (of the automatic play take-up type comprising a spherical inner portion adapted to swivel in a hollow outer portion, said spherical inner portion consisting of a spherical head 3 truncated above its middle cross-sectional diametric plane at 4 so as to comprise more than a hemi-sphere, and formed with a cavity 5 slidably engaged by a member 6 comprising a cylindrical portion and a part-spherical cap 7 having the same outer radius as the partspherical head 3 resilient means 8 being interposed between member 6 and head 3) is characterised in that the hollow outer portion consists of a cup 12 formed with a concave spherical inner surface 13 and made of a material requiring no lubrication, e.g. textile, fibrous, plastic or metallic material, and of a plug 14 rigidly secured to the cup, said plug having a nearly hemi-spherical configuration capping the upper portion of said part-spherical head and having an edge surface bearing against an edge surface of the cup in a plane slightly on the plug side of the middle crosssectional diametric plane perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the hollow outer portion. so that the part-spherical head bears, in all its possible positions, against the interior part-spherical surface of the cup and the part-spherical interior surface of the plug. As shown in Fig. 1, the member 6, comprising a part-spherical cap 7, consists of a steel sheet cylinder provided with a part-spherical cap portion; alternatively, this member may comprise a mushroom-shaped member with a cylindrical shank and a part-spherical head. The resilient means may be a spring, pad of elastomeric material or spring washers and, in the embodiment employing a mushroomshaped member, may be situated between the truncated top face of the part-spherical head and the part-spherical portion of the mushroom-shaped member or between the lower face of the cylindrical shank of the mushroom-shaped member and the bottom of the blind bore in the part-spherical head. The plug may be secured by crimping, screwing or by means of a ring-shaped distance-piece secured in turn by crimping. |
