PURPOSE: A positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery is provided to minimize the side reaction of a positive electrode active material and electrolyte and to suppress the elution of manganese and degradation at charging and discharging. CONSTITUTION: A positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery includes a lithium metal composite oxide core represented by chemical formula 1, Li_wNi_xCo_yMn_(1-x-y-z)M_zO_2; and a coating layer containing fluorine compounds on the lithium metal composite oxide core. In chemical formula 1, 1.2<=w<=1.5, 0<x<1, 0y<1, 0.5<=1-x-y-z, and M is one or more metals selected from Al, Mg, Fe, Cu, Zn, Cr, Ag, Ca, Na, K, In, Ga, Ge, V, Mo, Nb, Si, Ti, and Zr.
