An iron-based sintered sliding member comprising (by mass): 0.1-10 % Cu, 0.2-2.0 % C, 0.03-0.9 % Mn, 0.52-6.54 % S, 0-10 % Ni, 0-10 % Mo with the balance of Fe and impurities and where [S%] (0.6x[Mn%]) lies in the range 0.5-6.0 %. The sliding member comprises at least 50 % by area of martensite in which pores and 3-30 % by volume sulphide particles are dispersed. Also a method of making an iron-based sintered sliding member by forming a mixture of iron powder comprising 0.03-1.0 % by mass Mn and the balance iron, copper powder, graphite powder and at least one of iron sulphide powder, copper sulphide powder, nickel sulphide powder and molybdenum disulphide powder, where the mixture comprises (by mass): 0.1-10 % Cu, 0.2-2.0 % C, 0.03-0.9 % Mn, 0.52-6.54 % S, 0-10 % Ni, 0-10 % Mo with the balance of Fe by compacting the mixture and then sintering it at a temperature of 1000-1200 0C after which it is quench hardened and tempered. If present molybdenum and nickel can be added in the form of iron-molybdenum powder, iron-nickel powder, molybdenum powder or nickel powder. |
