A glycol ether is produced by reacting an olefinic compound, a primary alcohol and an organic hydroperoxide in the liquid phase in the presence of a metal epoxidation catalyst. Suitable catalyst include compounds of Ti, V, Cr, Se, Zr, Nb, Mo, Te, Ta, W, Re and U, of which many examples of organic and inorganic salts are given. Reactants exemplified are methanol, propylene and cumene hydroperoxide giving 1-methoxy-2-propanol and 2 - methoxy - 1 - propanol; many others are mentioned. A basic substance, e.g. Group Ib or IIb metal compound may also be present. Propylene oxide is a by-product in the reaction between the reagents specified above. |
