A wax thermostat 1 for an internal combustion engine (ICE) cooling system with radiator and by-pass inlets 12,11, has a closure element 23 integral to a first piston 21 with a main wax chamber 20, and an auxiliary wax chamber 30 for moving the piston 21, with a heating means thermally connected to the auxiliary wax chamber 30. The heating means can be an electric heater controlled by an engine control unit (ECU), and the pin 22,32 of each wax chamber 20,30 can be made as one common piece. A spring 40 biases the closure element 23 towards its closing position. During start-up in very cold conditions when coolant in the radiator is much lower than that in the bypass, the electric heater is energised to prevent instable fluctuating opening and closing of the closure element 23.
|
