Unsaturated sulphonic acid betaines and a process for their production

Novel unsaturated sulphonic acid betaines of the general formula wherein R is an alkenyl or aralkenyl radical, R1 and R11 are the same or different alkyl radicals having 1-4 carbon atoms, R111, R1111 and R11111 are the same or different and may be hydrogen or an alkyl radical having 1 or 2 carbon atoms and m is 1 or 2, are prepared by reacting an acid hydrazide of the general formula R-CO-NH-CH2-NH-CO-CO-NH-NR1R11 with an aliphatic sultone of the general formula at temperatures from 0-150 DEG C. The acid hydrazide starting materials may be prepared by condensing an oxalic acid ester amide with an unsaturated carboxylic acid methylolamide, or its alkyl ether, to form alkenylamido or aralkenylamido methylene oxamide esters which can then be reacted with N,N-disubstituted hydrazines to yield the corresponding N,N-disubstituted oxalic acid hydrazides of the above general formula.
