1,123,636. Web coating apparatus. CONTINENTAL OIL CO. 9 Jan., 1967 [31 March, 1966], No. 1175/67. Heading D1L. Curtain coating apparatus wherein a hot liquid melt 'is gravitated as a film upon a substrate 2 to be coated and said substrate is continuously passed beneath the gravitating liquid film 7 and over a chill roll 11, includes a pressure roll 10 in alignment with the chill roll and adjacent thereto and exerting a pressure on the chill roll and so aligned that the substrate with the resulting film passes between the nip formed between the chill roll and the pressure roll with the coated side in contact with the chill roll and 'the underside in contact with the pressure roll, such that the film coating is smooth and bubble free. The temperature of the coating is preferably controlled, e.g. by passing the film over a pre-cooling roll prior to applying the pressure, so that it is only partially set when the pressure is applied, and the pressure is at least 10 lbs per inch of nip and preferably in the range 25 to 150 lbs. per inch of nip. The pressure roll 10 can be arranged to act directly on the substrate without the latter passing there-around (Fig. 3, not shown).
