1,125,239. Aryl-1,3,5-triazines. CIBA Ltd. 21 Sept., 1966 [24 Sept., 1965], No. 42202/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Divisions A5 and C3] Novel compounds of Formula I in which A 1 represents an alkylene group, M x represents a hydrogen or ammonium ion or a cation of a metal of group 1A, 2A, 2B, 3B, 4B or of iron, cobalt, nickel, manganese, copper or chromium, n represents the valency of the cation and Z 1 and Z 2 each represent a benzene residue that may be substituted by halogen atoms, alkyl, alkoxy or hydroxy groups or at most one phenyl group or a side-chain of the same type as is attached to carbon atom 6 of Formula I are prepared by reacting the corresponding 2-Z 1 - 4 - Z 2 - 6 - (2<SP>1</SP>,4<SP>1</SP> - dihydroxyphenyl) - 1,3,5-triazine with an alkane-sultone In Formula I, A 1 is preferably a lower alkylene group of 3 or 4 carbon atoms, M x is preferably hydrogen, ammonium, sodium, potassium, calcium, barium, zinc, lead, nickel, copper, cadmium, cobalt, manganese, or chromium ion, and Z 1 and Z 2 are preferably substituted in one or two positions on each benzene residue by hydrogen atoms, alkyl or alkoxy groups of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, or by chlorine atoms. The sultone, preferably 1,3-propane-sultone or 1,4- butane-sultone, is added in 1 or 2 molar proportions per mole of hydroxyphenyl triazine compound, preferably in the presence of an organic solvent which is chemically inert and will dissolve the sultone, and in the presence of a base, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate, at temperatures between 10‹ C. and the boiling point of the reaction mixture.
