PURPOSE: A method for operating a nonvolatile memory device is provided to reduce a resource overhead of a memory system including the nonvolatile memory device by efficiently managing an erase count. CONSTITUTION: An erase count is read from a dummy flag cell of a selected memory block(S110). After the erase count of the selected memory block is read, the selected memory block is erased(S120). It is determined whether or not the selected memory block has been erased(S130). The erase count stored in a counter and an erase count register increases(S140). The increasing erase count is stored in a dummy flag cell group of the selected memory block(S150).
