A buckle and retractor assembly for a seat belt comprises a knurled belt-clamping bar 35 located in elongated slots 40, 41 in a buckle housing 24, a fixed clamping element 36 mounted on the housing and spring retraction reel 13 including a member 37 pivoted to the housing 24. A belt portion 6 anchored to a vehicle at one end (10), Fig. 1, not shown, passes round the bar 35 and between the bar and the element 36 to the reel 13. In use with the belt under tension the bar 35 is moved to the right (as viewed in Fig. 2) to clamp the belt portion against the element 36. To free the belt the member 37 is pivoted, Fig. 4, so that parts 74, 75 of the member exert a camming action on extensions 46, 47 of the bar, moving it away from the element 36. The buckle includes a spring- biased latch (19), Fig. 3 not shown, engageable with an aperture in a buckle plate 14 on another belt portion 4 which has a retraction reel (8) unconnected with the buckle plate. In another embodiment, the member 37 is replaced by a cover member (37a), Fig. 12 (not shown) pivoted to the buckle housing at (88) and having cam faces (91) which act on the bar 35 similarly to parts 74, 75. The spring-biased latch (19) forms part of the buckle on the other belt portion i.e. belt portion 4. In a further embodiment, Fig. 16 (not shown), an inverted U-shaped cam member (99) depends from a reel cover 82(b) and is pivoted to a buckle member (107) which supports the bar (35b) and fixed element (36b). The cam-engaging parts of the bar (35b) are located within the cover. In a final embodiment, Fig. 21, the reel 13 is movable with a member 37c relative to a cover 82c. The cam faces are again located within the cover 82c. |
