A process for reducing the saline content of aqueous solution comprises the steps of contacting.. preferably multiple times, at conditions to effect incomplete , miscibility therewith and formation of a plurality of phases a quantity of at least one oxy-cyclic solvent with molecular cyclic configured portion comprising (-C-OC-) ether bonds, optionally with additional contacting with condensible gas not exceeding about 20% by weight.of solution, one of which phases' formed comprises a lower proportion of said impure content with respect to water content therein than. that in said aqueous solution being purified, separating the phases, contacting preferably multiple times said. one phase comprising a lower proportion of impurity content with at least one agent either to form an. azeotrope. or to. form separate phases. of water and oxy-cyclic solvent therefrom, and then distilling said azeotrope or separating said water and oxy-cyclic solvent phases to remove the oxycyclic solvent. and preferably evaporating said gas. if present to provide purified water. The oxy-cyclic solvent may be one. or a mixture of para-dioxane, meta-dioxane, dioxolane, dioxepane, a-trioxane, tetraoxocane, 1,3,5 - trioxepane and monomethyl and dimethyl and monoethyl and diethyl-substituent derivatives of any of the foregoing and substituted derivatives comprising a combination of the foregoing substituents: The condensible gas or agent may comprises SO 2 , N 2 O, CO 2 , or fluorinated methane or ethane.
