System and methods for home appliance identification and control in a networked environment

Method for setting up a control centric device 14 to command operations of an appliance 12. The method comprises: reading RFID data with a remote control 10 from a RFID tag 702 associated with the appliance 12; using the RFID data 702 of the appliance 12 at the remote control 10 to retrieve command codes from an existing device database to control operations of the appliance 12; and disseminating the RFID data 702 from the remote control 10 to the control centric device 14 via a network, wherein the control centric device 14 uses the RFID data 702 to configure itself to transmit commands to control operations of the appliance 12.
