A flue 3, Fig. 1 (not shown) for cooling combustible or waste gases from a steel converter 1 comprises a plurality of vertically arranged cooling tubes 7 forming the flue walls and being freely supported in a structure composed of several downcomer tubes 12 and an upper collecting chamber 9 for the cooling medium. The structure is strengthened by truss girders 16 and is secured to the supports 14 of the steel producing plant by brackets 13 located intermediate the ends of the downcomer tubes 12. The upper ends of the cooling tubes 7 communicate with the upper collecting chamber 9 and are fixed thereto by fishplates 10, and the lower ends thereof communicate with a lower collecting chamber 8. A layer of insulation 23 is held in place between the cooling tubes 7 and an outer jacket of covering sheets 21 by spaced angle plates 20 welded to the outwardly channelled portions of the sheets 21 and extending inwardly towards the tubes 7. A suction hood 4 extends laterally from the bottom of the flue over the steel converter 1 and comprises hollow cooling plates 24 supported on cooling tubes 25, 26, 27 and 28 connected to the downcomer tubes 12. The upper edge of the hood 4 is provided with a groove into which sealingly extends a sheet metal tongue on a collecting chamber 33, to thereby form an expansion joint. The collecting chamber 33 above the hood 4 is fixed to the cooling tubes by fishplates and the cooling tubes communicate with the chamber through tube turns 32. Tube frames 39, 18 in the flue walls are connected to the cooling tubes 7, the tube frame 39 being closed by doors 40 and the tube frame 18 being connected to a duct leading to a dust separating plant (not shown). The duct communicating with the opening 17 may be provided with an expansion joint. |
