<p>A height of the sensor above a surface which is to be detected is continuously determined. The scanning beams emitted from the sensor for scanning the surface to be detected is adjusted by roll rotation as a function of the detected sensor height, such that a variation of the surface to be detected is reduced during an orbit of the lateral view sensor.
