[Also in Division B2] In apparatus for gasketing container closures of the type having a disc-like top panel and a cylindrical skirt surrounding said panel, a chuck 6 for holding the closures has a chucking surface comprising an annular closure supporting rim 44 of a diameter substantially equal to the diameter of said closure, a recessed area 40 surrounded by said rim 44, a source of vacuum operatively communicative with said recessed area 40 and means to prevent tilting of the closure while moving on to the chucking surface positioned within the recessed area. In the arrangement shown the chuck 6 is formed at the end of shaft 9 which is reciprocable vertically from a position in which a closure 5 is loaded on to the chuck and a position adjacent a gasket material ejection nozzle 1, and which is rotated through sleeve 11 by pinion 13. Vacuum is applied to the chuck via bore 21 and port 22 in shaft 9, an annular opening 23 in sleeve 11 and a pipe 24 communicating with a vacuum source. The recess 40 of chuck 6 has an annular lining ring 46 of moulded vinyl plastic and four interconnected radially extending ribs 42 formed on its bottom surface and extending across the central bore 41 and four radial ribs 43 in between the ribs 42 but only extending from the edge of the bore 41. Both series of ribs 42 and 43 are triangular in crosssection and extend upwardly from the bottom surface of recess 40 a distance less than the depth of rim 44 so that the upper surface of said rim extends above the upper surfaces of the ribs. In another embodiment the chuck has an annular recess bordered by an upstanding rim and a disc suspended in the centre of the recess by a plurality of radially extending fingers and in a further embodiment the recess has a porous screen secured within the annular recess of the chuck. |
