An orthoformic acid ester of an alcohol (2-6 C atoms) is prepared from an orthoformic acid ester of an alcohol with fewer carbon atoms than the alcohol by transesterification with an alcohol (2-6 C atoms), under pressure at a temperature of 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. and in the absence of an ester-interchange catalyst. Trimethyl orthoformate is the preferred starting material and examples describe transesterification with ethanol, n-propanol, n-butanol and n-hexanol. The process may be continuous and the alcohol liberated is removed by distillation.
