Partly reduced iron, such as iron powder or sponge produced by solid reduction and mixed with carbon and slag-control agents, is reduced and refined in a furnace rotating or oscillating about a horizontal axis and having a burner at one end and a waste gas outlet at the other end, the reduction being carried out at 1100 to 1350‹C. by means of a reducing atmosphere above the charge. Besides the oxygen injected with solid, liquid or gaseous fuel, e.g. methane or fluidized pulverulent fuel, by way of the burner, oxygen may be blown into the furnace from devices in the walls to maintain an oxidizing atmosphere wherein CO 2 ; CO + CO 2 volume ratio is at least 0À7. The refined product may be further subjected to a H 2 treatment to eliminate C and O from the iron, followed by vacuum treatment and/or bubbling through argon to eliminate H. The carbon content of the refined iron may be adjusted in a ladle by adding graphite; Si and Mn may also be added.</p> |
