[Also in Division G1] In a sag compensator for a gear burnishing or lapping machine, the gear G is supported on a spindle 42 extending through a vertically slidable housing 20. The pinion P is mounted on a spindle 26 journalled in a housing 27 adjustable about an axis 29. Vertical movement of the housing 20 is effected by a screw 36 under the control of a rotatable dial 39. The weights of the gear G and arbor are then determined, and the distance A of their centre of gravity from the mounting face 51 of the spindle, and the distance B of the cone apex 53 of the gear from the mounting face are measured. The moment of the gear is determined and zeroized against the distance B on the scale of dial 39, thus altering the level of the housing 20 through rotation of screw 36 to compensate for the sag incurred by the spindle when the calculated torque is applied to the gear. |
