In impregnating porous burned refractory shapes according to the processes of either Specification 990,314 or 1,010,032 a fluid-impervious coating is applied to a part of the surface of the shape, either before or after the preheating step. The coating can be a cellulose tape or a metal foil with adhesive on one side, or a metal paint. The shapes can be of magnesia with calcia, alumina or chrome ore as optionals.
