The device has a propulsion motor (3) coupled to an axle to transmit a propulsion force to wheels (5) of semi trailer (1), where the motor is controlled by a central control unit (31) and powered by an energy source. A steering axle (4) is mounted in front of the semi trailer and coupled to displacement unit to displace the axle between active and passive positions. The steering axle is deployed relative to the semi-trailer in absence of tractor (2) in the active position and retracted relative to the semi-trailer in the passive position to allow coupling of the semi-trailer with the tractor. The propulsion motor is an electric/hydraulic motor. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a semi-trailer (2) a heavy goods vehicle.
