A method for controlling a rotary drilling system, for directional drilling of the borehole through the earth formation and comprising a drill string and a bottom-hole assembly coupled with a drill bit, to directionally drill a borehole through an earth formation, comprising: applying a side force to the bottomhole assembly to generate lateral motion of the bottomhole assembly in the borehole and provide for side cutting by the drill bit; and controlling, using direction control element connected to the bottomhole assembly so that its position remains stationary during rotary drilling of the borehole, the lateral motion of said bottomhole assembly to direct the side cutting and provide for the directional drilling of the borehole in the first direction and move the direction control element on the bottomhole assembly for controlling the lateral motion of said bottomhole assembly to direct the side cutting and provide for the directional drilling of the borehole in the second direction. |
