The method involves turning on a number of LEDs (12) of an external lighting device i.e. daytime running light (10) of an electric car in proportional to a charge state of a traction battery. One of the LEDs is made to flicker upon charging failure of the battery, where the turning on operation and the flickering operation are performed in response to a user control such as remote opening/closing of a door of the electric car. Each of the LEDs includes a light spot of predetermined size, where turning on of the LEDs is carried out during a charging phase of the battery.
