PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element which has a low driving voltage and high luminous efficiency, is superior in durability, and has a superior effect of preventing generation of a dark spot and light emission unevenness.

SOLUTION: In the organic electroluminescent element having at least one layer of an organic layer including an emission layer which is sandwiched between an anode and a cathode, at least one layer of the organic layer contains a phosphorescent organometallic complex represented by the general formula (1), where a ligand is coordinated with a metal atom.
