<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a decrease in the substantial recording rate for rewriting operation in cases of adopting a Shingle recording technique which allows a densely recording. <P>SOLUTION: A first recording and a second recording are selectively performed for a magnetic recording medium. In the first recording, a substantial recording rate is low but a recording density is high, while in the second recording, a recording density is low but a substantial recording rate is high. In the first recording (b), each recording column has an overlapping portion but has no non-overlapping portion.
