[Also in Division C2] Therapeutic compositions, having estrogenic properties and useful for promoting the growth of meat-producing animals, contain novel benzoic acid lactone derivatives of the formula wherein R is H, C 1-5 saturated acyclic acyl, CH 3 is benzyl and X is -CH 2 .CO-, -CO-CH 2 -, and -CH(R<SP>2</SP>). CH(R<SP>2</SP>)-, where R<SP>2</SP> is H or OH, or N(R<SP>3</SP>) 2 and R<SP>3</SP> is H, C 1-15 alkyl, CH 2 CH 2 OH, monocyclic aryl group, or aralkyl having up to 15 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one R<SP>2</SP> is OH, as the active ingredient. The compositions may be in a form suitable for parenteral or oral application, e.g. or a constituent of an animal feedstuff, which may also contain vitamins and/or antibiotics.
