To vary the clearance volume, the crank-shaft is mounted in a cradle 15, which may be rotated about an axis 19 by adjusting the vertical position of a rod 23, which is screw-threaded at 24 to coact with an internally threaded gear 30, which may be rotated by a manually rotatable worm gear, Fig. 3 (not shown). A lock nut 25 is provided for rod 23. The cradle comprises two parallel struts, Fig.2 (not shown), in which the crank-shaft is journalled, the ends of the struts being connected by two parallel rods, to one of which the rod 23 is connected whilst the other defines axis 19 and is located in the crank-case by rods 20, 21. Rods 20 afford support on opposite sides of the plane perpendicular to the crank-shaft and passing through the connecting rod 4. Gauges may be connected with the rods 20, 21 to record the horizontal and vertical forces applied to the crank-shaft assembly.
