Self-extinguishing bonded non-woven fabrous fabrics are prepared by impregnating a fleece of fibres with a bonding and combustion-resisting composition comprising (i) 20 to 200% by weight of one or more polymers based on acrylic esters and/or butadene, (ii) from 15 to 15004 by weight of one or more copolymers containing at least 80% of vinylidene chloride units and (iii) from 15 to 150% by weight of antimony trioxide the percentages by weight being taken with reference to the weight of fibres. The fleece may be carded and may contain fibres of wool, cotton, rayon, polyesters, polyamides, polyacrylonitrile or mixtures thereof. Glass or mineral wool may also be treated. Suitable polymers of type (i) are those of butylacrylate, ethylhexyl acrylate and copolymers of these acrylic esters with monomeric compounds such as vinyl esters, styrene, butadiene, vinyl, chloride and vinylidene chloride. The binds based on butadiene may be particularly copolymers thereof with avrylonitrile or styrene. Suitable copolymers of type (ii) referred to above include copolymers of vinylidene chloride with acrylic esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl esters or vinyl chloride. Aqueous dispersions of the polymeric substances (i) and (ii) may be used to impregnate the fleece but the copolymer containing vinylidene chloride and the antimony trichloride are preferably added in powder form to an aqueous dispersion of the polymer of type (i). The impregnated fleece may be dried by squeezing and then heating and in Example 4 a vulcanisation paste is included in the impregnating agent and vulcanisation is effected by heating. In each of Examples 1 to 4 the bonding agent includes as a thickening agent an aqueous solution of a copolymer of vinyl-pyrrolidene (65%) and vinyl acetate (35%). |
