The method involves limiting reduction in a mass air flow to a minimum mass air flow when reduction of drive torque of an internal combustion engine (2) is requested, where the minimum mass air flow is specified as a function of a surge limit of a compressor (81) in case of a pressure difference existing between an output side and an input side of the compressor. The requested drive torque is adjusted with the existing mass air flow by inhibiting incineration in cylinders (3) of the combustion engine by interrupting injection of fuel into the cylinders. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for operating an internal combustion engine (2) a computer program product comprising a set of instructions to execute a method for operating an internal combustion engine.
