Disclosed is an apparatus for electrical pain suppression. The apparatus is comprised of a main module, a synthesiser module and one or more channel modules. The main module includes data storage means and data processing means. The data storage means stores signal amplitude parameters Vi corresponding uniquely to a set of sixteen different primitive waveforms S00-S15. Each primitive waveform Si has a periodic and predetermined pattern over time. The data storage means also stores parameters T-packi, Freqi and T-sloti relating to the time duration of a packet, the frequency of a packet and duration of an interval between packets, respectively. The data processing means is adapted and configured to process a data set Bi identifying a sequence of two or more of the different primitive waveforms Si in a time sequence. Each of the primitive waveforms of the sequence is processed on the basis of one or more of the second parameters T-packi, Freqi and T-sloti. The synthesiser module includes means for generating an electric output signal corresponding to the sequence of two or more primitive waveforms. The one or more channel modules Chk are provided to apply the electric output signal to surface receptors in polymodal nerve fibres so that the electric output signal is carried by the polymodal nerve fibres as non-pain information to suppress pain.
