The method involves closing the intake valve (13) before bottom dead center of gas exchange in primary operating point of the internal combustion engine (1), in such a way that portion (16) of combustion chamber (5) for combustion air/fuel mixture is pushed back into the intake passage (6), to participate in subsequent combustion. The throttle valve (11) is closed, until combustion air from intake manifold (10) is sucked into combustion chamber and the intake timing is adjusted based on primary operating point, during transition from secondary to primary operating point of engine.
