The method involves transferring heat on air (H) supplied into a vehicle inner space (16) by a heater (12) and a heat exchanger arrangement (14) of an auxiliary heating system (10). The heater and a fresh air or circulating air switching arrangement (20) are controlled by a control arrangement (22). Circulating air (U) is supplied to the heat exchanger arrangement in an operating phase on start of the heater. Fresh air (F), or fresh air and the circulating air are supplied to the heat exchanger arrangement in another operating phase following the former operating phase. An independent claim is also included for an auxiliary heating system for a vehicle.
