The combustion engine (1) has a cylinder head (4) and a reciprocating piston (5). The compression chamber volume (6) in the cylinder head is maintained constantly per work cycle of reciprocating piston. The cylinder head is provided with an additional cylinder (7) having an auxiliary piston (8). The compression chamber volume is varied with respect to the additional volume (9). The compression ratio of compression chamber volume is set in the range of 8-16. An independent claim is included for method for operating reciprocating internal combustion engine.
