1,140,222. Tubular heat exchangers. SCHMIDT'SCHE HEISSDAMPF-G.m.b.H. 11 Feb., 1966 [12 Feb., 1965; 24 June, 1965], No. 6132/66. Heading F4S. A gas cooler particularly for cooling cracked or other hot gases, comprises upright parallel tubes 5 having their ends secured by closure members 2, 3, the tube assembly being contained within a casing 1 in which a body of coolant water is located. The level 11 of the water within the casing 1 is controlled, e.g. by a float valve (not shown), the space above the water constituting a steam chamber, in which are baffles 13 with openings 15 disposed in staggered relationship, which force the steam to describe a tortuous path generally transversely of the tubes 5. The steam is thereby dried and slightly superheated by the tubes. At least the lower closure members 2 may comprise a plurality of hollow elements 4 into which some of the coolant may flow, as described in Specification 1,129,588. Apertures 10 which allow the coolant water to enter the hollow elements are provided around the tubes 5 in the hollow elements 4 (Fig. 2) and further holes (18) may be provided in the inwardly facing sides of the hollow elements (4) to cause a circulation of coolant through the hollow elements. The casing may be formed with an upper section 19 of larger diameter to increase the capacity of the steam chamber. Short tubes 17 may be employed in the region of the water level to protect the tubes 5 from corrosion.
