The method involves making constructional and/or electrical measures of oscillation emitters i.e. windings (U, V, W) of a stator (2) of a periodical swinging unit i.e. drive motor (1), to be satisfied according to specific portions of a frequency spectrum of impact sound generated by the oscillation emitters. The spectrum is examined according to clusters assigned to a characteristic during proper operation of the drive motor. The motor is classified based on the located clusters, where a rotor (4) of the motor is driven by an unsteady circulating electric field. The electric measure is unsteady circulating electric field or cyclic changing energy supplied to the windings of the stator. An independent claim is also included for a device for identifying a characteristic of a periodical swinging unit.
