The device has an airbag module (6) that is ignitable by a crash sensor (7) e.g. contact sensor, which is arranged between a bonnet (3) of a motor vehicle (1) and a windscreen (2). A pyrotechnically driven airbag (9) partially or largely covers the windscreen and/or lateral roof pillars (5) in an activated state (I). The airbag module is provided with a retraction device for immediately retracting the airbag after partial deployment of the airbag into a field of view releasing position. The retraction device is formed by elastic bands (10, 11), which are arranged with the airbag.
