2-Ethylbutadiene-1,3 is obtained by copolymerizing propylene with ethylene or butene to obtain a heptene, isomerizing if necessary to recover 3-ethylpentene-2 or 3-methylhexene-3 and demethanating to obtain the ethylbutadiene. In one embodiment propylene is polymerized with two mols. of ethylene, in two stages, if desired via propene-2, to form 3-ethylpentene-2 or 3-methylhexene-3. In another embodiment propylene is polymerized with butene-1 or butene-2 to form 3- or 4-methylhexene-1 or -2, or 2-propylbutene-1 which are isomerized. Polymerization is effected at 0-300 DEG C., 0-4000 p.s.i.g. and 0.2-15 v./v./hr. over an alkali or alkaline earth metal or hydride thereof on carbon, silica or alumina. Demethanation is effected at 500-825 DEG C. and 10 mm. mercury to 500 p.s.i.g. for 0.001-2 seconds in the presence of a diluent. |
