This sound absorbing material can be obtained by means of foaming a rubber composition containing an ethylene-propylene-diene rubber. The sulfur content in the sound absorbing material calculated by means of fluorescence x-ray measurement is no greater than 1000 ppm by mass. The 50% compression load value of the sound absorbing material is 0.1-10 N/cm2 inclusive. The 50% permanent compression set of the sound absorbing material is less than 50%.
