摘要 <p>The present invention relates to a method and system for recognizing facial expressions. More particularly, the method comprises: a step of performing a convolution on an input image using a DoG kernel; a step of extracting a face region from the image on which the convolution has been performed; a step of extracting an appearance parameter and a shape parameter from the face region; a step of converting a pre-stored active appearance model (AAM) based on the extracted facial characteristic elements and synthesizing the converted model and the face region; and a step of updating the appearance parameter and the shape parameter until the synthesized face image converges with the image forming the input face region within a preset mapping value so as to recognize a facial expression. Thus, the visibility of the detailed region of the image is increased and noise is reduced, such that characteristics of a local region such as an eye, nose, and mouth are strengthened and appearance information, such as that for a cheek, which contains repeated and unnecessary information, is suppressed. Thus, unnecessary information can be removed from the image and significant information, which might be suppressed by lighting through an object characteristic extraction, can be protected.</p>
