<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a side chain substitution ethylene diester type acid dianhydride which has excellent solubility with respect to organic solvents and to which a pretilt angle of a liquid crystal can be applied as a liquid crystal alignment treatment agent, a manufacturing method therefor, and polyimide. <P>SOLUTION: There are provided a side chain substitution ethylene diester type acid dianhydride represented by formula [1], a production method thereof and a polyimide. In the formula, R<SP POS="POST">1</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">2</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">3</SP>each independently represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1-20 carbons, and R<SP POS="POST">4</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">5</SP>. R<SP POS="POST">6</SP>and R<SP POS="POST">7</SP>each independently represents a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group of carbon numbers of 1 to 20 or a haloalkyl group of 1-20 carbons, wherein at least one of R<SP POS="POST">4</SP>, R<SP POS="POST">5</SP>.
