A knife sharpening mechanism for cutting machines having a knife 23 guided for reciprocatory motion comprises a grinder carriage 36 movable to and fro along the knife edge and having sharpening abrasive belts 30, 31 mounted thereon for movement into and out of engagement with the knife edge, and arms 47 pivoted on the carriage at opposite sides of the knife and having their free ends urged by springs 51, 52 towards the knife. The free ends of the arms 47 have extensions 62, 63 at opposite sides of the knife and extending upwardly above the abrasive belts. Setscrews 64, 65 are adjustable in the extensions so as to be moved toward or away from the knife as required by the thickness of the belt which depends on the grain size of the abrasive; the set screws have friction means to maintain the adjustment despite vibration. When the carriage 36 is in its upper inoperative position the set-screws are spaced from the knife but when the carriage moves downwardly the set-screws can move into engagement with at least a portion of the knife to hold the belts in correct relation to the knife. For adjusting the angularity of the bevel of the cutting edge of the knife, guide blocks 70, 71 having hardened wear blocks 79 which press the belts against the knife are pivotally mounted on studs 72, 73 on the arms 47. The blocks are secured in adjusted positions by set-screws 74, 75 engaging annular grooves 77 in the studs 72, 73. The set-screws 64, 65, 74, 75 are provided with the same type of recesses, such as hexagon or spline type, so that one wrench or key 80 can be used for all of them. |
