This polymer electrolyte fuel cell is provided with: an electrolyte layer-electrode conjugate (5); a first separator (6A) on which a first reaction gas flow region; and a second separator (6B) on which a second gas flow region. On the first separator (6A), at least one first return part (28) of one or more first return parts (28) is provided with a first recessed part (48) and a first protruding part (58). On the second separator (6B), at least one second return part (29) of one or more second return parts (29) is provided with a second recessed part (49) and a second protruding part (59). Viewed from the direction of thickness of the first separator (6A), the overlapping surface area, which is the total of surface areas in which the first recessed part (48) and second recessed part (49) overlap each other, is 5% or less of the total surface area, which is the surface area of the total of the surface areas of all first recessed parts (48) and the surface areas of all second recessed parts (49). |
