An anode material for a lithium ion battery, the anode material being comprised of a mass of comminuted, mechanically milled alloy particles, preferably of nanometre size, the alloy consisting of a major amount of silicon (Si) with minor amounts of aluminium (AI), iron (Fe), optionally tin (Sn), optionally mischmetal (MM), optionally titanium (Ti), optionally zirconium (Zr), and incidental impurities.
