A communication system (100) comprises: a relay apparatus (20) that is connected to an external network (11) and that functions as an http server; and a relay apparatus (30) that is connected to a LAN and to the relay apparatus (20) and that periodically transmits an http request to the relay apparatus (20). The relay apparatus (20), when having received a request from a terminal (10), puts the request into an http response responsive to the http request from the relay apparatus (30) and transmits, to the relay apparatus (30), the http response including the request. The relay apparatus (30) transmits the request, which is included in the transmitted http response, to the LAN. Then, when having received response data responsive to the request, the relay apparatus (30) creates an http request including the response data and transmits the created http request to the relay apparatus (20).
