Heat transfer apparatus comprises a body of heat storage material 12 and a circuit containing a volatile heat transfer liquid, which circuit includes a passage 14 within material 12 in which the liquid evaporates, a heat exchanger 18 in which the vapour condenses while heating a fluid, a receiver 21 for condensed heat transfer liquid and a variable volume chamber 30 for maintaining a substantially constant pressure in the circuit. Valves 32 and 34 respectively admit and expel gas from the system when the pressure falls below or exceeds predetermined values. A pump 42 having a valvecontrolled re-cycle line 46 returns liquid from reservoir 21 to passage 14, the pump and/or valve being controlled in response to the temperature of the fluid, e.g. water, ethylene glycol or air being heated in a container 22 around exchanger 18. The heat transfer liquid may be water, alcohols, halogenated derivatives and ethers and the heat storage material may be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide or lithium hydroxide heated by electricity combustion gases or solar energy. Quantitative examples of system operation are given.
