1,031,129. Blasting cartridge assemblies. HERCULES POWDER CO. Dec. 31, 1964 [Jan. 10, 1964 (2)], No. 53081/64. Heading F3A. A blasting cartridge which can be connected to similar cartridges to form a columnar assembly for seismic operations and comprising a casing 1 of thin blowmoulded synthetic plastics, e.g. high density polyethylene, is provided with a male coupling element 4 at one end and a female coupling element 6 at the other end for interconnection with the coupling elements of like cartridges. Each end coupling is provided with threading to produce a locking engagement between the cartridges. This threading may be continuous as shown in Fig. 1 or interrupted by longitudinal slots to facilitate assembly. The coupling 4 has a convex end closure 5 into which the explosive 2 extends from a yieldable seal 3 within the coupling 6. The casing 1 is reinforced by longitudinal ribs 10 and circumferential ribs 11. The explosive 2 may be 49.0% nitroglycerine, 1À5% nitrocotton, 36.0% sodium nitrate, 7.0% pulp, 30% coated cob meal, 2.0% starch, 0.5% bagasse, and 1.0% chalk, all parts being by weight. Projections locking in corresponding indentations (not shown) may be formed in the end couplings. Linear polyethylene is the preferred material for the casing, but polyolefines generally and copolymers and alloys thereof may also be used, as well as materials such as plasticized vinyl chloride. Other explosives which may be used are gelatine dynamites, slurry explosives &c. The seal 3 may be polyethylene or treated paperboard, waxes, resins and waterproofing compounds. |
