PURPOSE: An environment-adaptive face recognizing device and a method thereof are provided to obtain an optimal image for recognizing a face even though a user hides light or a section in which the brightness of the light is changed. CONSTITUTION: A visible ray image obtaining unit(12) obtains a visible ray image and an infrared ray image obtaining unit(10) obtains an infrared ray image. An image analyzing unit(140) analyzes the infrared ray image and the visible ray image to detect a face area. If the face area is not detected from the visible ray image, the image analyzing unit estimates the face area of the visible ray image by using the infrared ray image and determines suitability by analyzing a face feature of the face area of the visible ray image. If the face area of the visible ray image is not suitable, a light control unit(142) controls the brightness of lighting to obtain the visible ray image.
