A coating-composition is formed by emulsifying a hydrocarbon binding agent such as bitumen, a clay gel, and water with the soap or salt of a cationic surface-active agent. The clay is one containing montmorillonite, e.g. bentonite, and is mixed with 50-150% by weight of water and 2-15%, preferably 5-8%, of the emulsifying agent. The cationic surface-active agent may be a quaternary ammonium compound, a primary, secondary, or tertiary aliphatic amine containing 8-24 C atoms per molecule, polyamines which have been reacted with ethylene or propylene oxide, hydrazines, or phosphines, and they are reacted with formic, acetic, or hydrochloric acid. The composition may be mixed with a filler such as a mineral aggregate. |
