A ticket-operated barrier for controlling both the entry to and exit from a railway station or the like includes ticket slots 3a, 3b at each end of the barrier, and detectors 5a, 5b for a ticket inserted at 3a or 3b, controlling the direction of movement of a conveyer 12, said conveyer moving the ticket past validating apparatus 14 and discharging the ticket through the opposite slot 3b or 3a. Detection of an invalid ticket by the apparatus 14 or a person moving past photoelectric detectors 15a, 15b in the opposite direction to that of the ticket, closes a barrier arm 16a or 16b. The detectors 5a, 5b control solenoids 6a, 6b withdrawing members 8a, 8b from the ticket path and closing feed rollers 9a, 10a and 9b, 10b. The control system is shown in Fig. 3. On sensing a ticket, the detector 5a or 5b places a signal on line 21a or 21b to drive the conveyer in the appropriate direction and prepare an " AND " gate 34a or 34b. The " AND " gate fires on receipt of a validation signal from the apparatus 14 to inhibit a circuit 36a or 36b and prevent operation of the associated barrier arm 16b or 16a. A signal is generated on line 24a or 24b according to the order in which the photo-electric detectors 15a and 15b are operated. In addition, a reset circuit 38 is energized. The barrier arms may be replaced by a turnstile and a buzzer or lamp provided to give warning against fraudulent operation of the barrier. Switches may be provided to switch off one detector 5a or 5b and convert the barrier for one-way traffic only. |
